Nous mesurons les informations difficilement quantifiables contenues dans les témoignages des présidents de la Réserve fédérale américaine devant le Congrès et analysons leurs effets sur les marchés financiers. Nous constatons que l’augmentation des indices d’émotion textuelle, vocale ou faciale pendant ces témoignages entraîne généralement une hausse du cours et une baisse de la volatilité des actions. -

Pourquoi les grandes entreprises technologiques lancent-elles des services de paiement sur leurs plateformes? Nous nous penchons sur cette question en utilisant un modèle dans lequel une plateforme en situation de monopole doit faire un compromis entre les coûts associés aux préoccupations concernant les renseignements personnels des utilisateurs et les revenus tirés de ses services de données. Nous analysons ensuite les effets de rétroaction entre les données et les paiements. -
The Costs of Point-of-Sale Payments in Canada
À l’aide de données tirées de notre enquête de 2014 sur les coûts des modes de paiement, nous calculons les coûts en ressources des paiements effectués en argent comptant, par carte de débit et par carte de crédit. Pour chacun de ces modes de paiement, nous examinons l’ensemble des coûts assumés par les consommateurs, les détaillants, les institutions et les infrastructures financières, la Monnaie royale canadienne et la Banque du Canada. -
A Stochastic Simulation Framework for the Government of Canada's Debt Strategy
Cette étude en deux volets porte sur la stratégie de la dette, qui peut se définir comme la façon dont le secteur public finance l'excédent de ses dépenses par rapport à ses recettes, ainsi que sur le remboursement des dettes arrivant à échéance. Dans le premier volet, l'auteur fait ressortir la complexité de l'analyse de la stratégie de la dette, puis il montre que ce type d'analyse est par définition un problème de contrôle optimal stochastique. -
Geographical and Cultural Proximity in Retail Banking
Ce document mesure l’incidence de la proximité géographique et culturelle des succursales bancaires sur les choix des ménages en matière de crédit et sur les prix qui leur sont offerts. Pour les produits qui exigent une vérification préalable du crédit plus complète, nous montrons que les deux types de proximité peuvent se compléter pour réduire les coûts liés à l’obtention d’informations difficilement quantifiables, ce qui accroît l’accès au crédit. -

L'auteur étudie le rôle des garanties dans un contexte où prêteurs et emprunteurs ont la même information et partagent des attentes semblables quant à la valeur future des garanties. À l'aide de techniques d'évaluation des options, il montre qu'un prêt assorti d'une garantie équivaut à une obligation ordinaire qui comporte une option de défaut de paiement de la part de l'emprunteur.
