La transmission des variations des taux de change dans les pays industrialisés
La mesure dans laquelle les variations du taux de change se répercutent sur les prix est une question qui intéresse depuis longtemps les économistes. Cet intérêt a toutefois été avivé dans les années 1970, lorsque l'inflation s'est mise à grimper et que de nombreux pays industrialisés ont adopté des régimes de taux de change plus flexibles. On redoutait, en particulier, qu'une forte dépréciation de la monnaie n'entraîne une spirale inflationniste. Ces craintes se sont atténuées lorsque les pays industrialisés ont commencé à réduire et à stabiliser leur niveau d'inflation dans les années 1980 et au début des années 1990. La période de faible inflation dans laquelle la plupart des pays industrialisés sont entrés il y a une dizaine d'années a coïncidé avec la dépréciation substantielle du cours de certaines monnaies, dépréciation qui a touché les prix à la consommation de ces pays de manière beaucoup moins prononcée que prévu. Ce qui a amené beaucoup à conclure que le degré de transmission des variations du taux de change aux prix à la consommation avait faibli. Dans cet article, les auteurs examinent les facteurs qui pourraient rendre la transmission incomplète et passent en revue les diverses estimations empiriques du degré de transmission pour déterminer s'il a effectivement diminué. Puis, ils exposent les raisons possibles de cette baisse et examinent ses implications pour la politique monétaire. -

Nous étudions les effets de l’élargissement des programmes d’assurance-emploi et de l’introduction de subventions salariales sur le marché du travail et la prospérité économique dans le contexte de la pandémie de COVID-19. Nos résultats montrent que ces mesures sont complémentaires et bénéfiques pour différents types de travailleurs. Les subventions salariales permettent de garder en poste les travailleurs qui occupent des emplois hautement productifs, tandis que l’assurance-emploi compense la baisse de revenus de ceux qui perdent inévitablement leur emploi. -
