Pour autant, la plupart des modèles n’arrivent pas à créer de transmission importante des cycles à travers les échanges internationaux. Nous montrons que la nature de cette transmission dépend essentiellement des caractéristiques qui gouvernent la réaction de l’offre de travail et de la demande de travail à l’évolution des prix relatifs internationaux. -

Dans une petite économie ouverte, les variations du taux de change réel peuvent influer sur la rotation des usines, et donc sur la productivité globale, par les modifications qu’elles entraînent dans la configuration du marché. Lorsque la monnaie du pays s’apprécie, le niveau de concurrence augmente sur le marché intérieur du fait que la concurrence des importations s’intensifie et que les possibilités d’exportation s’amenuisent, chassant ainsi les usines moins productives du marché et obligeant les nouvelles venues à se montrer plus compétitives qu’elles ne l’auraient fait autrement. -

Nous présentons une nouvelle base de données en temps réel et de prévisions tirées des projections économiques du personnel de la Banque du Canada. Nous évaluons ensuite les prévisions relatives à la croissance du PIB et à l’inflation mesurée par l’indice des prix à la consommation depuis 1982. -
Income Inequality in Canada
Les données montrent que les inégalités de revenus au Canada se sont accrues fortement dans les années 1980 et la première moitié des années 1990, mais qu’elles sont demeurées relativement stables au cours des 25 dernières années. Elles se sont surtout creusées au détriment des personnes à faible revenu et des jeunes, alors que les personnes âgées ont vu leur revenu de retraite s’accroître. -

L'incidence des fluctuations du taux de change sur les prix à la consommation
Dans le premier volet, plutôt théorique, l'auteure analyse les facteurs qui influencent le mécanisme par lequel les variations du taux de change se transmettent aux prix à la consommation. Dans le second, elle examine l'expérience canadienne récente en la matière à partir de 1992. Plus précisément, elle utilise l'analyse de la première partie pour expliquer pourquoi la dépréciation de près de 20 % du dollar canadien entre 1992 et 1994 ne s'est pas traduite par une hausse du taux d'inflation aussi forte qu'on l'aurait prévu à la lumière des estimations traditionnelles de l'incidence des variations du taux de change sur les prix. L'auteure explique ce phénomène d'abord par les facteurs énumérés dans le volet théorique, à savoir la conjoncture de la demande, les coûts d'ajustement des prix et la perception de la durée de la dépréciation, et ensuite, par des facteurs plus particuliers tels que l'abolition des droits de douane entre le Canada et les États-Unis et la restructuration du marché de la vente au détail. Ces derniers éléments ont sans doute contribué à neutraliser l'effet de la dépréciation du dollar sur les prix.
