Enquête sur les attentes des consommateurs au Canada – Troisième trimestre de 2023
Les consommateurs perçoivent encore l’inflation courante comme étant forte, ce qui diverge des données officielles. Cette perception continue de se traduire par des attentes d’inflation élevées pour les 12 prochains mois. Les attentes des consommateurs relatives aux taux d’intérêt à l’horizon d’un an demeurent aussi élevées, et un grand nombre de répondants estiment que les effets des taux d’intérêt plus élevés sur leurs dépenses vont durer encore un bon moment. En raison des taux d’intérêt élevés, les détenteurs d’un prêt hypothécaire à taux variable sont plus susceptibles que les autres consommateurs d’indiquer que leur situation financière a empiré. Les répondants à l’enquête sont plus nombreux à prévoir des achats importants de services, comme des vacances ou des billets de concert, plutôt que de biens qui seraient vraisemblablement financés par un prêt, comme un véhicule ou des appareils ménagers. Les réponses des travailleurs montrent des signes que le marché du travail se modère. Par exemple, la période moyenne de recherche d’emploi a augmenté. Ils restent toutefois confiants vis-à-vis du marché du travail. -

Nous avons traversé une année difficile. La tourmente financière qui a débuté au milieu de 2007 a dégénéré, au cours de 2008, en une crise financière mondiale généralisée. Si le système financier canadien a fait preuve d’une résilience et d’une solidité remarquables à bien des égards, l’envergure de la crise et de la récession qui s’en est suivie à l’échelle du globe avait, à la fin de l’année, des répercussions grandissantes sur notre système financier et notre économie. -
Weakness in Non-Commodity Exports: Demand versus Supply Factors
Nous utilisons le modèle TOTEM (Terms of Trade Economic Model) pour effectuer des simulations basées sur l’offre et la demande. Dans les deux cas, les simulations font état de faibles exportations canadiennes hors produits de base par rapport à l’activité étrangère, ce qui cadre avec les données récentes. -

Analyse des vulnérabilités des ménages à l’aide de données fines sur les prêts hypothécaires
Les auteurs exploitent des données détaillées sur les prêts hypothécaires à l’habitation dans l’espoir de mieux comprendre les vulnérabilités associées au marché hypothécaire. Ils constatent que la proportion des prêts hypothécaires à faible rapport prêt-valeur est en hausse, tout particulièrement dans les régions où la croissance des prix des propriétés est forte. De surcroît, les destinataires de ces prêts ont une marge de manœuvre limitée en cas de choc défavorable, puisqu’ils ont des niveaux d’endettement élevés par rapport à leurs revenus, et qu’ils ont contracté des emprunts assortis de longues périodes d’amortissement. -
The Role of Intermediaries in Selection Markets: Evidence from Mortgage Lending
Cette étude s’intéresse à la façon dont les courtiers hypothécaires aident les emprunteurs à obtenir des offres de prêt hypothécaire et à y être admissibles. Nous constatons qu’en moyenne les emprunteurs qui font appel à un courtier obtiennent un taux d’intérêt moins élevé. Cependant, dans environ 15 % des cas, les emprunteurs sont orientés vers des prêts assortis de périodes d’amortissement plus longues par rapport au choix qu’ils auraient fait par eux-mêmes. Puisqu’une période d’amortissement plus longue entraîne des coûts d’intérêt totaux plus élevés sur la durée du prêt, une telle recommandation s’avère coûteuse. -
Natural Monopoly and Distorted Competition: Evidence from Unbundling Fiber-Optic Networks

L’auteur étudie si le « dégroupement », dont l’imposition oblige les entreprises qui exercent un monopole naturel à partager leur infrastructure, empêche la construction de nouvelles infrastructures par des firmes faisant leur entrée sur le marché.
