La baisse du degré de persistance de l'inflation au Canada : causes et conséquences
La persistance de l'inflation, mesurée aussi bien selon l'indice de référence que selon l'indice global des prix à la consommation, a sensiblement baissé au Canada depuis les années 1980. En plus de présenter des estimations actualisées de la persistance de l'inflation, l'article examine les raisons avancées dans la littérature pour expliquer la diminution notée. Il opère une distinction entre le rôle rempli par la politique monétaire, de par son incidence sur les comportements de fixation des prix et des salaires, et l'influence des changements structurels potentiels de l'économie qui ne dépendent pas de la politique monétaire. Les auteurs analysent également les conséquences d'une faible persistance de l'inflation sur la conduite de la politique monétaire, y compris la question du choix de la poursuite d'une cible d'inflation ou d'une cible de niveau des prix. -
