La dynamique de la courbe de rendement des obligations du gouvernement canadien de 1986 à 2003
Cet article décrit une base de données historique que la Banque du Canada a créée sur les courbes de rendement coupon zéro des obligations du gouvernement canadien. Il présente en outre les résultats d'une première analyse statistique du comportement des taux d'intérêt coupon zéro (ou taux au comptant) au cours de l'ensemble de la période d'observation et de deux sous-périodes distinctes. L'article porte plus précisément sur les points suivants : l'évolution en niveau de taux d'intérêt clés et de certains attributs représentatifs des courbes de rendement; les variations quotidiennes de ces taux d'intérêt et de ces attributs; la détermination d'un nombre relativement restreint de facteurs qui ont dicté le comportement de la courbe de rendement; et le rendement total qu'on aurait obtenu en détenant des obligations de diverses échéances pendant une durée précise. -

Cette étude met en évidence une tendance systématique dans la façon dont les salaires, les heures travaillées et leur relation varient entre les entreprises de différentes tailles. En utilisant un modèle intégrant des entreprises et travailleurs hétérogènes, nous montrons comment l’interaction entre les salaires, les heures travaillées et la taille des entreprises influe sur la répartition des travailleurs et l’inégalité. -

Le rôle des cambistes dans l'alimentation du marché du dollar canadien en liquidité au-delà d'un jour
La possession d'information sur l'évolution future du cours de la monnaie peut être un précieux atout dans le marché des changes. D'après les données présentées par D'Souza, les cambistes canadiens seraient plus enclins à procurer de la liquidité au-delà d'un jour à leurs clients lorsque ceux-ci sont établis à l'étranger, car les flux financiers ayant leur origine hors du Canada peuvent renseigner davantage sur les futures variations du taux de change. L'auteur met en lumière la relation statistique entre l'apport de liquidité assuré par les entreprises non financières et l'offre de liquidité des institutions actives sur les marchés des changes, aussi bien dans le temps que sur les différents marchés. Il fait observer que la relation entre les positions des clients commerciaux et des teneurs de marché de même que le rôle joué par les cambistes à l'égard de la fourniture de liquidité au-delà d'un jour ont été sous-estimés dans la littérature relative à la microstructure des marchés. -
Canadian Bank Notes and Dominion Notes: Lessons for Digital Currencies
Cette étude analyse la période où des billets émis par des banques privées et des billets émis par l’État (les billets du Dominion) circulaient simultanément au Canada. Comme ces deux types de billets de banque présentaient de nombreux points communs avec les monnaies numériques d’aujourd’hui, les leçons tirées de l’époque où ils étaient en circulation peuvent éclairer le fonctionnement possible des monnaies numériques. -

Revue du système financier - Décembre 2013
Depuis la parution de la Revue du système financier de juin, on a observé dans le système financier international des évolutions favorables, qui reflètent en partie certaines indications encourageantes au sujet de l’économie à l’échelle mondiale. Parallèlement, d’importantes vulnérabilités subsistent. Le Conseil de direction estime que le risque global pesant sur la stabilité du système financier canadien a diminué, passant d’élevé à moyennement élevé au cours des six derniers mois. -

Une analyse de la titrisation des prêts hypothécaires à l’habitation au Canada
La titrisation des prêts hypothécaires à l’habitation joue un rôle important dans le système canadien de financement du logement, notamment compte tenu de la part croissante de la titrisation soutenue par l’État (la titrisation publique) au cours des quinze dernières années. Mordel et Stephens analysent l’évolution de deux types de titrisation au Canada, la titrisation privée et la titrisation publique, en s’intéressant tout particulièrement aux politiques publiques sous-jacentes et aux avantages économiques de la titrisation publique. Ils passent en revue les conséquences potentielles de l’expansion de la titrisation publique et concluent par un examen des politiques qui pourraient être envisagées pour revigorer la titrisation privée au Canada. -

La reprise de l’économie américaine au sortir de la Grande Récession : le rôle de la dette et du désendettement
La reprise américaine qui a succédé à la Grande Récession a été lente par rapport aux autres reprises survenues aux États-Unis durant l’après-guerre. Encouragés par le relâchement des critères d’octroi des prêts avant la crise, les ménages américains ont accumulé une dette d’un niveau insoutenable qui les a rendus vulnérables aux chocs négatifs. La chute considérable que les prix des actifs ont connue par la suite a obligé les ménages à assainir leurs bilans. Les ménages sont parvenus à réduire leur endettement, mais le secteur public doit maintenant s’attaquer au sien, ce qui pèsera sur la croissance économique au cours des prochaines années.
