Quels sont les déterminants des taux de change?
La compréhension des causes à l'origine des variations du taux de change représente un défi constant pour les économistes. Malgré des recherches approfondies, les modèles macroéconomiques traditionnels de détermination du taux de change — à l'exception de l'équation de taux de change de la Banque du Canada — n'ont pas obtenu beaucoup de succès. Cette lacune a incité des économistes à explorer de nouvelles méthodes de modélisation fondées sur des cadres d'analyse plus complexes et plus réalistes. Dans le contexte de la forte appréciation que le dollar canadien a connue en 2003 et 2004, Bailliu et King passent en revue les différents modèles de taux de change macroéconomiques ainsi que les modèles microstructurels qui mettent en relief l'importance des mécanismes de transaction, de l'asymétrie d'information et de l'hétérogénéité des investisseurs dans la compréhension de la dynamique de court terme des taux de change. Les auteurs dressent un bilan des connaissances actuelles concernant les déterminants du taux de change, soulignent les récentes percées dans ce domaine et dégagent de nouveaux axes de recherche prometteurs. -

Anticipations d’inflation et conduite de la politique monétaire : tour d’horizon des données et de l’expérience récentes
Les auteurs se penchent sur le rôle que les anticipations d'inflation jouent dans la conduite de la politique monétaire. Ils passent en revue les diverses mesures de l'inflation attendue tirées d'enquêtes ou fondées sur les marchés dont se servent les banques centrales, et évaluent leurs atouts et inconvénients respectifs. Ils étudient ensuite la fonction capitale des anticipations d'inflation dans le cadre qu'utilisent les autorités monétaires pour comprendre, prévoir et maîtriser l'évolution de l'inflation. Ils s'intéressent aussi au rôle de ces attentes comme indicateur de la crédibilité de la banque centrale, analysent le comportement des anticipations d'inflation au cours des deux dernières années, puis présentent leurs conclusions. -

À l’aide d’un modèle dynamique de la structure de capital, les auteurs étudient le lien entre l’exposition des entreprises au risque systématique et l’échéance de leur dette, ainsi que les incidences conjointes de ces deux facteurs sur la structure par terme des écarts de crédit. Dans leur modèle, la structure des échéances peut varier dans le temps et être irrégulière. Les obligations à long terme sont moins sensibles au risque de refinancement que les titres à court terme, mais leur illiquidité a pour effet d’alourdir les coûts d’emprunt. -
