L’insolvabilité des ménages au Canada
Comme les niveaux d’endettement des ménages ont augmenté ces dernières années, il se peut que le nombre de ménages vulnérables à des chocs économiques défavorables soit lui aussi en hausse. Tant les actions du débiteur que celles de ses créanciers peuvent concourir à provoquer sa défaillance. Les auteurs dégagent quelques faits stylisés sur l’insolvabilité des ménages au Canada et analysent le rôle des créanciers à cet égard. La dette d’une personne déclarant faillite au pays équivaut à plus de 1,5 fois celle du ménage canadien moyen. Les faillis sont souvent sans emploi ou occupent des emplois peu rémunérés, et ils sont généralement locataires. Les deux chercheurs relèvent que les banques affichant les taux d’approbation de prêts par succursale les plus élevés – et recourant le moins, selon leur interprétation, à des données subjectives (comme le jugement que forme le responsable du crédit sur l’intégrité et la fiabilité du demandeur de prêt) – sont aussi celles dont les clients font le plus faillite. Ce résultat a d’importantes implications, car les institutions financières qui n’utilisent pas ces renseignements sont plus exposées que les autres à une détérioration de leurs portefeuilles de prêts. -
